✨Shatter Me✨

This book was not what I expected. And that’s not bad, but just different. It reminded me of a mix between George Orwell’s 1984/Animal Farm and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

Books like these are sometimes a hard pill to swallow because you could potentially see the world turning into a place like the one within the bindings. I enjoyed this first book in the series, but I didn’t love the writing style. The slashed words/thoughts/journaling were a little distracting. The storyline was good and kept me interested. Overall I rated this a 3/5 stars. It was a good read. If you enjoy themes similar to the ones mentioned above, you’d like this book. I’m not sure the title matches the books theme though.

Sometimes I wish I never had to sleep. Sometimes I think that if I stay very, very still, if I never move at all, things will change. I think if I freeze myself I can freeze the pain. Sometimes I won’t move for hours. I will not move an inch. If time stands still nothing can go wrong.

It's actually a review after I re-read this book and the four stars are explained mainly by [a:Tahereh Mafi|4637539|Tahereh Mafi|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]'s writing : she has such a way with words and emotions, it is absolutely mind-blowing. I am a huge fan of her writing style, in between prose and "talked" english.

The negative points will just be about maybe the story in itself, even if I suppose she wanted us to have the same amount of informations as Juliette. We are immersed in a dystopian world, in which the elected government turned out to be authoritarian - one that wants to create a whole new language, and an equal society, judging how much one deserves a shelf, food, money or just the luxury of living. This world resonates with our own today's issues and maybe I wish she dug deeper in the story. I understand that it was maybe thought more as a love story (?), very centred around emotions more than the actual action, but it clearly deserved to be longer with a heavier plot.

Spoilers alert !

I’m sorry I’m such an asshole

This quote is so representative of Adam - (bear in my mind that I reread the book, so I was actually heavy influenced by my first read of the three first books) - I think I just hate him with my whole heart and everything in this first book seemed too much. He is manipulative and has a saviour syndrom : the perfect depiction of men in a sense.

I’m too poor to afford the luxury of hysteria right now.

I love Juliette, maybe because we are immersed directly into her thoughts but girl, damn stop estimating your value based on Adam's or Warner's or everyone else's view. She is a super-badass with a traumatizing power (and we all would freak tf out if only by touching someone we would kill them - not if we were sociopaths ofc), but I love to know that her character will develop more in the next books.

You don’t know it yet, Juliette, but you are a very bad girl,” he says, clutching his heart. “Just my type."

Aaron fucking Warner, ladys and gents. Yup, just what we needed. Okay well, he is a very disturbed character, but he has ✨trauma✨ so I forgive him. Got me all giggling and kicking my feet in the air reading all his interactions with Juliette, definitely too influenced by the next books (and mainly by the 1.5 tome, [b:Destroy Me|13623150|Destroy Me (Shatter Me, #1.5)|Tahereh Mafi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1340398466l/13623150._SX50_.jpg|19226840]).

So yeah, four stars because it is very easy to read, not a so light reading (because Juliette really has some serious traumas) and because of the love interest.

"You and I, Juliette — together? We could be unstoppable.”
