(The internet ate my original post - one of those computer/internet hiccups and it didn't save and now I've lost my train of thought. Boo.)
Tripp is lost without his guitar which was taken from him as punishment for his lacking grades and his withdrawal from life. Layla can play her cello with the accuracy and precision of a machine; it's just too bad that she feels like a robot when she plays it. Both of them are struggling with the expectations placed upon them by their family and friends.
The only solace they find is in a practice room and a beat up old guitar they must share - Tripp has odd days; Lyla has even days.
Their notes to each other start with a snippy note from Lyla to "Mr. Odd" about where he has left his trash but evolve into challenges that help both of them to grow. Suddenly they're creating music and their friendship is a comfort to them both, even if they have to keep it a secret.
But secrets don't last forever - can their friendship survive their family and friends' expectations?
This is a touching story of friendship and the power of music.

I guess I'm the oddball here, but I just didn't like it much. I think that I've been reading a little too much YA lately. The characters seemed like amalgams of every other YA book out there.
The whole book reminded me of this recent Onion article: http://www.theonion.com/articles/groundbreaking-young-adult-novel-features-protagon,36596/

Lyla & Tripp are complete opposites (or so they think). Lyla is Miss. Perfect and Tripp is the Loner. You never would think their paths would cross, but when Tripp's Mom takes his guitar away, and Lyla is trying hard to practice Cello every possible waking hour, They both sign up to use the music practice room. She gets even days and he gets odd days. When Tripp leaves trash in the practice room Lyla writes him a note, asking for him to clean any trash he leaves, This starts a friendship between the two that no one could have ever thought possible.
I really loved this book. It took me a little over a day to finish which is the fastest I've ever read a book. The chemistry between Lyla and Tripp is really adorable and funny. Overall I really recommend this book. It's Cute, Funny, Heartfelt and Sad.
