This was very interesting and sweet and I loved the ending. I think the story was hurt by listening to the audiobook, I wish I had read it instead.

Michael's parents move into a run-down fixer upper of a house just as his mom is about to have a baby. When the baby is born sickly, the fixing gets set to the side to accommodate many trips to the hospital and doctors visits. While this goes on Michael starts to miss his old home and is worried about whether or not his baby sister will live. He eventually starts exploring his highly hazardous home and finds a peculiar man living in his dilapidated garage. Also the nosy girl next door is homeschooled.

This is a pretty sweet story, reminding me of those books I read as a kid. Like Star Girl or Bridge to Terabithia, where the boy meets the girl and it irrevocably changes him at a pivotal point in his life.

This is a wonderful little book. Almond's language is aimed squarely at middle grade, yet is lyrical and poignant. There are so many little flourishes throughout that echo through the whole tale. From the first page to the last, I enjoyed this gem of a book!

I can totally see why it made the 1000 books to read before you die list.

I guess I had hoped for something a bit "more" with this one. Willing to suspend my belief for good writing but this one set up a beautiful story that didn't go anywhere :(
