I wish fantasy romance novels were allowed to be longer; too often I find myself rolling my eyes at the absolute speed in which characters fall in love. This is an older book so it definitely gets a pass, and with such a large ensemble cast, I'm sure I will continue reading on through the series as the subplot is interesting outside of the romance, and I want to see all the Lords get their happy endings.

This book holds everything you need in a good book, romance, love, death, life, intrigue, deception and curses to name but a few.

Showalter weaves a tale incorporating the best of the best giving you a tale to suck you in, spitting you out at the end making you want to plunge yourself in her world again.

Maddox is curse to hold a demon within him for eternity like his friends, his demon being violence, however as he happened to kill Pandora he is also cursed with dying time and time again at midnight the way he had killed her. With six stab wounds to the stomach.

Ashlyn has heard voices her entire life and was given up by her parents as they couldn't cope with her. She has worked for the institute her whole life finding mythological items and finding other people purely with her talent. She hears of the angels on the hill hoping they can help her, finding Maddox and getting pure silence when he is near for the first time.

Attraction runs deep with them and they find it better to cope with the other at their side.

A brilliant read.

This was an enjoyable read. The love story between Maddox and Ashlyn was great. Maddox was cursed for opening Pandora's box, along with his friends. Therefore, he has to fight a demon who lives inside him from taking control of himself. Ashlyn hears voices and she does not want to hear them anymore. I mean, I think I would lose my mind if I heard voices constantly. I really enjoyed the back story. The secondary characters were great as well. This book really surprised me. I am looking forward to what the rest of the series has in store. Overall, a great read.

I remember trying to read this book a couple years ago and didn't make it far. Not even to 30% if I remember correctly. I grew bored and put it down and never went back. Having recently picked it up again to give it another try from the beginning I'm understanding why that might've happened.

The story itself is fine. Interesting enough. The hero suitably angsty and broody. The other guys/demons also a little interesting as well. But the heroine? Hahahahahaha

-old review-First book of the series, and I have to say, I love the concept. I give it 4.5/5 stars only because there were some scenes that slightly bored me. I'm really looking forward to the next book, especially because it's about Lucien, he is one of my favorite characters so far!

-new review-
Came back to this book after about 3 years. Still interested in the concept and looking forward to finally continuing on with the series.

This is the first romance I've read since I was a teenager, and my, how things have changed. I used to like Gothic romances, which is pretty much this, and the last romance I read was Wuthering Heights, falling in love with Heathcliff for so many years that I almost named my dog after him. I almost forgot about Heathcliff the cat.
Anyway, reading this romance, I could see the formula that I've seen in a lot of write-your-own-novels - Ratchet up the conflict. Keep the conflict going higher and higher, and the constant misunderstandings the denial, the "No, I won't. No, I won't, but we both want to' teasing throughout until the culmination (ahem) in chapter 18.
Meanwhile plot has enough holes to drive a freight train through; Ashlyn's a mutant, ok. Maddox is immortal, ok. He's cursed, ok, too. But then Deus ex Machina at the end? So disappointing.
I suppose that's what's supposed to happen with a love story: all is happy in the end. Need to read more to get the feel of the genre before I make further decisions.
Next on deck, J.R. Ward.

I really liked this. I'm actually quite surprised by it. I met a lot of characters in this book. And I mean a lot! I think by the end there was around 10-12 "Lords", each with a different demon associated with him, which is going to take some memorizing. Of the ones I met, some of their demons seem almost impossible to live with. I have no idea how Showalter is going to give each one a HEA. But I look forward to finding out! This particular book is based on Maddox who carries the demon Violence within. My only negative was a slight lack of action (I appreciate a good fight/chase/escape scene in my books, especially in a book full of immortal warriors) and that the setting stayed the same for almost the entire book, but I'm thinking this was because so much time needed to be dedicated to the back-story of how the Lords came to be, meeting each Lord and obviously we had to give our leading two time to fall in love. Aw.
