Angsty hero. Check.
Unbelievably beautiful, spoiled heroine with heart of gold. Check.
"I've loved you forever" trope. Check.
In spite of (or maybe because of) these things, I still found myself fully engrossed in the story. I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship.
What kept this from being 5 stars was really the portrayal of Serafina's parents, for whom I felt a great affection after reading the first book of this trilogy. I realize it's hard to maintain the fully fleshed out characters of one novel when using them as secondary characters in another, but I was disappointed that as parents, Lazar and Allegra were somehow lacking and consequently, Serafina grew up lonely and isolated.

I almost never dnf books, but I simply can't continue after the fmc and mmc were fondly reminiscing about her as a baby throwing a temper tantrum and what he did to calm her down... during a smut scene.

This book is a RIDE. The hero with mummy issues pines for a girl 14 years his junior, embraces himself in her bosoms and they have an explosive time together. The heroine pursues her love fiercely and unapologetically which I adore. It also has political intrigues of a fictitious Italian island set during Napoleonic France and spontaneous virgin lactation. Like I said, a ride.

This is just what the doctor ordered for my book blahness lately. This was the perfect historical romance with just the right amount of adventure and romance.
