I really enjoyed this, but I can see why it is not for everybody. This is very much an internal meditation on (anticipatory) grief/mortality/loss and not a plot driven novel. Despite the heavy subject matter and the numerous times I felt extremely emotional while reading - because Broder just nailed what I can only badly deem the aching humanity of being an alive Human Person on Earth and feeling one’s feelings and perfectly captured some thoughts I had while my own father was unwell and in the hospital - the narration was also funny and just delightfully weird. I look forward to checking out this author’s other titles.

I couldn’t relate to the main character and she kind of grossed me out.

Wanted more of the protagonist in the cactus but thought the ending was nice.

Wild book about a woman's trip into the dessert to process caretaking, grief, and some other stuff through what's either heatstroke/imaginings or a magical journey. Weird but good. Might be interesting to pair with Bluets--I could see it being right for a Maggie Nelson reader.

DNF at 70%. Really funny and well written, but just not for me
