its nice knowing how someones love life goes on during a world war that affects their whole life but there was way too much romance, I would've liked more war focused chapters.

Went into this thinking I would love it because of how the book was described but its kinda misleading, I really didn't know it would be this romance heavy

Although it was an interesting change to have WWII historical fiction from the perspective of an ordinary German, rather than a Jewish or Allied perspective, the affect was ruined by a melodramatic soap-opera-esque love quadrangle that overshadowed all other elements of the plot.

The book read a lot more like a romance novel than historical fiction which I found a huge shame. The back of the book showed me a lot of potential for a good historical, exciting read but the use of vocabulary made it read ‘cheap’ at times (he kissed me ‘deliciously’).

Half way through the book it got a little better as the love scenes reduced, and I genuinely wanted to know what would happen with the characters. Although it went on a bit too long and found myself skimming a bit. 2.5 stars.

Got halfway through and didn't finish. This book is too focused on the love triangle and I don't care for romance novels.

I feel a bit meh about this book. I’ve seen so many good reviews and it’s ABIA shortlisted but for me it missed the mark. I didn’t really attach to any of the characters. The storyline was okay and was the only thing that vaguely invited me to persevere... but if you’re looking for something gripping, this ain’t it.
