I loved this book. As a Bengali currently in residency, this was super relatable. And i couldn't put it down.

a funny, heartwarming look at love and families and sex, like an indian bridget jones or love actually. can't tell you how refreshing it is to read about these things from a non-white pov, and ali really nails it with how fully she develops her dialogue and characters. excited to see it adapted for the big screen!

I started this when it first came out but I got scared off by that one bad reviews here and gave up. But I recently saw it on a bunch of UK best of 2022 lists so I decided to try to again and I’m glad I did. It was one of those books I was thinking about constantly while I was away from it. I was a little disappointed in the ending which is why I’m only giving it 4 stars.

I'm realising now it's harder to write book reviews for books I did not enjoy. Love Marriage is a soap-drama-style story focusing on the cultural clash between two families, the Sangsters and the Ghoramis. Initially, the book had me excited with this fresh idea and the vibrant writing. However, the prose became increasingly dull as it continued with certain chapters being a slog to get through. Despite the enticing premise, the execution left something to be desired. The characters, particularly the therapist scenes, felt almost comically two-dimensional and stereotyped. The protagonist was selfish, boring, and unlikeable. The plot itself also became increasingly messy and unrealistic and I found the book lost any realism or believability by its end. The tension and love between Yasmin and her father is palpable, and this relationship forms one of the more nuanced aspects of the book. While there were some other nice touches, overall Love Marriage was a disappointing arrangement.
