sophie was actually justified in everything she did, she was a shit fucking friend to agatha but i put that down to pure dumbness or lack of social awareness rather than malice. she was bloody annoying but she wasn't evil until the school itself gave her a reason to be a villain. dare i say she is another neurodivergent person failed by the school system. a victim of her environment. tedros is a sexist POS and actually needs to die. hort is amazing though. agatha is the biggest traitor to the goth race. she is like the new crow movie. she is like tim burton dropping out of mai the psychic girl and making ms lose all respect for him. the fact she actually likes tedros and gets used to the "good" lifestyle is insane. i know plenty of goth girls ungoth for average boys but i consider them all posers. ❤HORT IS TRUE GOTH❤ we love HORT.❤  anemone needs to be fired for cultural appropriation.

I hate this book. The themes are so inappropriate for a middle school book. I hated hearing fat shaming, beauty culture, diet culture, and misogyny themes for middle school kids. I'm not sure if it was the authors preference for the narrator to give a lisp to the only Asian character or it was the narrator/producers decision but it was the wrong choice. Also why the fuck are teenagers naked in this book. Worst thing I have read all real. I finished it hoping the moral of the story would correct all of those things but it doesn't. For middle school books, I hope it fixes it at the end of the series but I will not be finishing the series. I also don't think those warnings shouldn't be on a middle school book if it's a series. I understood the good might not be good moral theme but to hear girls learning horrible things about self worth I hated it.

I am begging Tedros McArthur to have one solitary critical thought in his entire life.

This book was cute. I picked it up as an audiobook to listen to on Libby while I worked, and I enjoyed the whimsical, adventurous "Middle Grade"ness of it all. I did feel like the character arcs got a little repetitive: Our main characters go through multiple downfalls and redemptions throughout the course of the story, which could have been slightly consolidated.

I liked both our main characters though, despite their flaws. I appreciated the way they played off of each other. I was far more interested in their story than the story of most of the characters around them, and I felt like the boys got very little development despite being a very steady presence throughout the book. Hort and Dot were some stand-out side characters that deserved better.

By the end of this book, I still wasn't sure if it was the gayest straight romance or the straightest gay romance I've ever read.  I'll probably give the sequels a listen and see if there's any clarity there.

Over all, a solid middle grade book that I feel like both adults and children would enjoy.

A re read from childhood and this book is still entertaining although it doesn’t stand up to the level I remembered. Lots of fat phobia, toxic relationships and friendships as well which I don’t remember being so outright. Overall an ok book and enjoyable to read.
