A very cosy cast of characters, feels nostalgic to read about a simple community travel together. It felt epic and episodic especially.
The start of the book is slow compared to the rest of the book but picks up quickly to a moderate pace of moving from one danger to the next.
The characters are relatively distinguished between each other but most lack any real memorable character development. The treatment of the female characters too was lackluster - most serving as duplicates of their male partners, with only 3 notable female characters mentioned.
Overall, good-natured adventure with realistic stakes for a group of woodland animals but lacked character development in a way that hindered the overall impact of the story.
Would read again as a comfortable read.

Moderate: Animal cruelty and Animal death
I would recommend this for young readers as it gently presents the true hardships of the natural world without sugar coating. There is named character death and relatively uncomfortable imagery but it is presenting real life, honest depictions of animal death and human/animal conflict. Would be a good book to open up conversation about death in the natural world.kommatator's review against another edition
