Le Guin herself lamented the fact that, in the writing of the book, she succumbed to the levels of a manifesto. I therefore went in expecting something very clear-cut in terms of the theme of "war and colonialism bad". And, sure, you could say that was the message, but that would be like saying that an apple is just a fruit and there's nothing else to it (sorry about my sad metaphors, I may have stayed too long in the sun). To me, Le Guin doesn't write simplistic books. There's layers upon layers, and then some. In mere 113 pages she managed to transport me into another universe, world, and minds of beings that I couldn't have imagined into existence. She forced me to spend time in the mind of Captain Davidson, a person so loathsome, yet one that sadly exists in every society and probably in most governments/central decision-making systems.

It's incredibly sad to think that Le Guin wrote this short book in the face of the US war on Indochina, and how we as humans haven't learnt much in the decades since - think of the genocide of Uyghurs, for one. We're a horrendous race capable of endless killing of each other, and this is the plague that we would no doubt take on other planets if we could. It's a very insightful read for sure.
