This is offensive garbage. 0 stars.

First off, this is a book with a ton of trigger warnings. There is a lot of emotional abuse and a very graphic
rape.

The book started off slow, and the characters who are being threatened were so obnoxious that I found it hard to care about them. Two of them in particular just treat the others around them so poorly. I also feel like the clues were poorly paced. Things kept happening, but no additional clues were given. All the reveals piled up on each other at the end. The last book gave away the twist too early, but I feel like this one started giving clues too late.

The pace picked up at the end, but the final resolution was so offensive.
Christian's three friends raped his sister, and he didn't stop them. He had schizophrenia and Dissociative Identity Disorder, and he developed "another personality" that was a version of his sister, and that personality killed Magnus and sent the threatening letters to the others.

This is a really offensive portrayal of
mental illness.
The ending only makes sense if you buy into tired stereotypes. This book is just spreading stigma against an already marginalized group.

The ending did not come as a surprise.
Quite early on I though it was Christian, dressed as either his mom or as Alice, who was doing the murdering as well as sending the letters. After Erica found Alice’s drawings for Christian, I knew for sure.
I feel like the explanation of schizophrenia ánd DIS was a bit too much. Tried to look up the prevalence of such comorbidity but couldn’t find anything unfortunately.
Erica was truly insufferable and Patrik way too patient and kind.

Having said this, I really enjoyed the book. It was a fast read and again I loved how Lackberg gives us snippets of information, alternating between past and present, leading us to the conclusion. And that cliffhanger!?! Really anxious to read the next instalment!
