I don't remember how I picked up this book, but I remember expecting this to be a murder mystery. It felt like a romance more than a murder mystery, and I generally prefer mystery more than romance. I decided to still give it a try and continue reading it. The storyline was dragged out, I skimmed through the book most of the time so that I can finish the book soon.

The mystery part was ok, I didn't expect the ending. The romance part for Janie was predictable, but the romance part for Bay makes me angry. What he claimed to be love was not love, not even friendship or anything like that. That's just being selfish and weak, which is fine if a character has flaws, except there's no growth in that man. I just wished that there's better character growth other than the last minute (literally) of his appearance.

Another great book by Lauren Willig. She crafts mysteries so well that I rarely guess who did what. Some of the smaller plot developments were predictable but the large ones were surprises for me. Like many historical fiction and mystery writers these days, Willig rotates her chapters between two different characters and time periods. I know everyone is doing this, but I really like. I always feel like I get a fuller context and story that way. I enjoy getting to know the different characters better this way.

Often arch, sometimes histrionic, replete with black/white villains/heroes who are fond of saying things dryly. And quite enjoyable!
