Being a Brit, I've read a huge amount of English based WWI literature. Not much from the Canadians, our allies who also suffered huge losses in the French trenches. This book is a circular story of Robert Ross, son of a transport magnate who volunteers to join the offensive. He survives gas attacks, artillery bombardments, and the attentions of war widows only to commit an apparently deadly crime. What drives such a quite young man to break the law? Is it the war, his nature, or was the crime itself an act of humanity?
