Some really really great information in here that is inspiring and useful without being overwhelming.

Would recommend, especially for those in corporate positions.

Awesome!

I recommend this book to anyone who feels like they are “stuck” and need a little motivation. You won’t be disappointed.

I had no idea how old this book was when I started reading it, so I almost feel like it's not fair for me to review it.
This book was obviously written in a very different economic and social environment, and it's written to women of a completely different generation. I also think that this was probably targeted to women who are mid-career.
I still think there were some useful principles in here, particularly from the standpoint of attitude and self esteem, that are still relevant today. But when the most recent statistics are from 20 years ago, it's hard to find a book like this relatable.

I thought this was generally excellent career and life advice, especially for women. The author manages to carve out space between balancing personal life and career success well while acknowledging specific pressures to being a women. A worthwhile read for all.

I abandoned this book 17% through. The content and writing style is obviously a few years older than current reads. I heard a few recent recommendations for it, and didn’t realize it was over 10 years old until I was about 5% in and recognized this was not a current reporting on improving finances. I enjoy reading financial books and self help re: finances. I also listen to a lot of podcasts. To be fair, I also do already make 6 figures, thanks to a of those resources. The advice in this book lines up with my research and experience. My rating comes from the fact that none of the info in here was new or surprising to me. The interviews are interesting, and if you’re new to the journey of financial development, it may be worthwhile. But if you’re even moderately proficient and already increasing your income, I’d suggest skipping this book.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. I always knew I was making less than my male counterparts - probably working smarter and harder too, yet needed help on how to break throughthe glass. Barbara's advice and clear steps gave me internalized goals and standards I have never let go of. This book is on my must-read list for every woman in business.
It works too... within a year I went over six figures and then a few years later doubled it. Granted it wasn't just this book but it lays a great foundation.

The idea that you have to be someones employee and ask for more money to be financially independent is really old. It is a book trying to look feminist but cant get rid of its initial internalized misogyny. These ideas belong to 2000’s patriarchal financial culture. Praising the bare minumum is not a reason to write a book, I thought I would read success stories but I kept reading oh he hired me, oh they paid me for my sebatical etc. I dont think it is meant for women who know their worth and refuse to stay in the mindset “this is how it is”
