I originally read this as a kid. I reread it just now with my 9 year old. She absolutely LOVED it, and I had fun reliving it through her. It’s not great literature, but it’s a fun story with a great combo of old lore and creative new concepts. Super quick read with a good amount of substance for the age level.

Quick edit to add that although I say it’s not “great literature,” it is well-written, and includes some very beautiful and memorable lines for a book at this level, especially about loss. I also wanted to add that for a quick stand-alone read from almost 30 years ago, many parts of it were quite memorable for me throughout my life and it all came flooding back while reading it again now.

Read out-lout to a third-grade class. I can't say it really held their interest. It would make a good movie, but the plot is formulaic and the characters lack depth.

This was one of the very first books that I got and read to myself. It was also one of the first that ignited and fed my love for the mystical, the old, the mythological in a setting not too foreign from my own. As a children's book it was perfect! Who doesn't want to believe that they can go into a strange little store and find the creature they love but have been told is a myth, a dream. The end was the first, most gut wrenchingly sad which I had read in my short reading career and still brings a tear to my eye. What a book!

Second book in the Magic Shop series, which is really a series of self contained stories with the almost forced linking of the magic shop.which seems to have been worked into the store rather than being a natural fit. It was an ok story in its own right, I'm not convinced it needed to be part of a series, at this stage anyway.

So cute. I loved the Bruce Coville alien books as a kid, and my kids weren’t enthused when I introduced them. A friend suggested showing them some of his other fantasy books, which I hadn’t been aware of at all. This book was such a hit that my 10yo insisted I read it as well, and I enjoyed it very much :)

Better than My Teacher is an Alien. More of a sympathetic story line, with more emotional content.

This was my favorite. This was the one that inspired me to become one-sided pen pals with Bruce Coville.
