Victoria Larque has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She writes the stories I want to read and she mostly writes them the way I want to read them. It never takes long before I start caring about her characters and in every book I feel all the emotions they're feeling. I was therefore really excited when she was willing to send me a package with the four books currently published in her indie series. And I couldn't wait to start reading the first one.

From the very first chapter I was in love. In love with the story. In love with the world. In love with the characters. This is the author's debut book and yet it's already so good and so well written. I like how everything seems possible in this world and yet it never feels completely unhinged. There are rules, there are structures, there is a system. But there is still a lot of room for characters to be different, unique and original.

The heroine in this story is without a doubt the star of the book. It's easy to understand why other monsters hate her. Her power is scary, but since we're spending so much time in her head and since we know what her power does with her and how she feels about her own power it's also very painful to see that all those people are judging first and getting to know her later. This girl deserves the world and more and I can't wait to see what's waiting for her in the next book.

I also really liked that this book was not just about the romance. There is romance in this book. It's a beautiful romance and I absolutely rooted for them. But there is also friendship. There is so much friendship in this book. Our heroine has been a loner for quite some time, but now she's meeting people who really care about her. And it's beautiful to see those friendships grow and develop. Even though the plot is not exactly making it easy for them.

I will certainly dive into the next book really soon!

There are a million reasons why a book I really want to read ends up staying on my tbr shelf for a very long time. One of the reasons is that I wanna be sure that I can enjoy the book to the fullest, that it's the right time to read it, that I can feel every emotion in it, that I can give it all my emotional attention. That time hadn't really come for this book, but since the author is coming to Fantasy Fest I really wanted to finish the books of this series I already own before meeting her.

It was really nice to be back in this world and once more I was very positively surprised by how big this world actually feels. There are loads of factions, queens and leaders and after reading the epilogue of this book I'm pretty sure we haven't even seen all of it so far. At times it does mean it's a little hard to tell everyone and everything apart. There are a lot of characters, locations, relations and political conflicts and sometimes I'm like "wait, what was that again?".

However, despite the fact that there's a lot going on and there are a lot of characters with backgrounds, romances and journeys, I really loved how the author managed to bring everything together in the finale. All the previous encounters, all the throw away lines and small remarks, all the meetings and fights, it was all playing a role in the finale. And although there are still some doors open, this also feels like a satisfying ending for our characters for now.

Especially Daphne and Mist are in a sort of good place at the moment. I'm glad they are. This book was filled with them getting hurt. Either because they were trying to free each other, help each other or save each other's lives. Luckily there were also a few really nice moments in between where they could talk and connect and where we could feel how their bond was strengthening and strengthening. It will be nice having them front and center again in the fifth book.

However, I'm now looking forward to dive into Nic's story soon!

Complex and rather captivating

This entire world is unique and inspiring, written in lush tones and immersive notes that paint a new reality - even if it is sometimes confusing. I ran to catch up to the characters, learning about them and their abilities on the fly - which suited as that was how the FMC learned most things as well. While she is part of this world, her exposure has been limited till a chance encounter with air demon drags her into the shadowy truth that has always surrounded her. It’s fascinating and well done.

Third person, multiple POV, Urban Fantasy, single love interest, gets steamy towards end.

Pros:
- well written
- Well edited for word usage and punctuation
- Characters are fully realized
- Ends with more questions and few answers, as all first books should.
- Long!

Cons:
- Some scenes feel redundant or filler: only reason it lost a star.

Really enjoyable read

This was unexpected- I liked the differing take on the paranormals and their factions. I also really liked Daphne as a character and how her relationships developed. All in all good book.
