Picked up this book thinking that this will be a whirlwind tale of a complicated relationship. It turns out to be so so different and YO this book took me to places I wasn’t expecting!!
.
Written in first person POV, the book plunges us into the mind of Irina; a photographer with a penchant for coke (not the drink), average looking-men (and possibly women?), and handing out biz cards to invite people to her studio for a shoot. The choices she made are interesting and…risky. Reading this was like a fever dream; delirious, slipping in and out of consciousness. And yet there is a lot of clarity and precision in the story line. That is the genius of the writer, Eliza Clark. And I also like the way parallels are made and the way the story unravels.
.
What kept me glued to the book is the almost voyeuristic entertainment of watching her spiral, the excitement to see where the story leads, and the self-righteous feeling of trying to diagnose Irina. Stepping into her mind as a reader is like sitting down with a friend and trying to diagnose her.
.
Very exciting book. This word makes me cringe but I have to say: unputdownable. Hands down one of the best books of the year.

take everything you think you know when reading this book, and throw it out the window. put it this way. you don't. its the perfect encapsulation of a self destructive tailspin and it is genuinely hard hitting in places where you dont even expect. eliza clark isnt just a writer, but an artist, (even giving irina a run for her money...)
dont read if you are not in the best mental space
