The antisemitism, I do not reccomend this book.
Also, I did not appreciate that theme of women being punished for having babies while unmarried.
Surely there were other things to write about.

The only poem of Shevchenko's that I'd previously read was «Заповіт» (in various translations). I can read Ukrainian, thanks to having studied Russian, but I have the approximate fluency of a newborn rabbit. I've spent the past couple of days reading through the 13 poems in the «В казематі» series, in Ukrainian as well as a handful of translations. It's good stuff; Taras Shevchenko is one of the if not the most famous and beloved of Ukraine's poets, and I can definitely see why. The combination of bitterness, sorrow, and deep love in his poetry is breathtaking.
My favourite poem of his (of which Nataliya has coincidentally recently posted an excerpt) is almost certainly «Мені однаково...», written in May 1847 in St. Petersburg:
I don't want to, and won't, blame ordinary people for the actions of their government. So understand what I mean when I say «Росія, іди нахуй.»
