Love this. Deviation from the other books by changing character perspective, but it was a blast to read!

I really like that the novels move between narrators, so we get to see more of the Price family in their natural habitats, as it were. I like Alex, and his scientific approach to cryptozoology (compared to Verity's more personal approach, which makes sense as she handles more of the sentient, human-like cryptids).

This is a good book. Seanan McGuire knows how weave a plot, when to let her characters shine and where to seed the story-arch. The problem is, this is a third book in a series that felt like a first book, since it's a new viewpoint character and he is rather shy and reserved.

Where Verity would open her soul to reader and dive into the danger surrounding her, Alex burns slow, keeping quiet and trying very hard to keep it together. He's a preserver, a scientist, not a protector, and that shows in every bit of the book, from the small world in which he inhabits (you can almost count the places he goes to in a single hand) and the select cast of characters, to the personal matter of the plot.

So, it's not a bad book, but it's not as grandiose as I expected, from reading the previous two. On the other hand, I love me a hunky scientist with a handgun, so there's plenty of points there.

The world building is, as usual, fascinating, but he plot in this one is weaker than the others. Maybe bring back Verity? Or at least make Alex more interesting? I'll be checking out the next one because it was still a lot of fun.

Very fun part 3. I particular liked that it’s the same world but the brother of the Mai. Character in the first two books.

I read half of this last night before bed, and then the other half this morning before getting out of bed. It was a good time.

The nerd gets the girl!! Ok, seriously, it's positively lovely that a protagonist can declare how awesome science is without either being an utter moron in life or being uber-physical. Sure Alex is well-trained, but it's not his go-to place and he'd much rather be analyzing critters in a swamp than getting into fights to prove he's still manly despite being smart. That being said, the story is candy. Delicious, sweet, will rot your mind if it's all you read and quite delectable all the way down. The characters are fun, the dialogue is spot-on funny and the plot moves along exploring the family as much as it pushes Alex into crazy situations. Quite enjoyable.
