Eigentlich hatte ich mich sehr auf meinen ersten Doctorow gefreut. 'Der könnte doch echt was für mich sein', dachte ich stets, wenn ich über seine Bücher stolperte. Leider scheinen wir nicht füreinander bestimmt zu sein. Zumindest die Lektüre von "Attack Surface" endete für mich in einer grossen Enttäuschung.
Angeblich gehört das Buch zu einer Reihe, ist aber als Standalone gedacht. Habe ich gelesen. Vielleicht ist dem aber doch nicht so, dann wäre dies eine Erklärung dafür, dass ich mit dem Titel absolut nicht warm wurde.
Schon auf den ersten Seiten stellte ich fest, dass mich die Hauptfigur keinen Deut interessierte. Ihre Taten, Aktionen, Gedanken und Gefühle blieben mir während der gesamten Handlung völlig gleichgültig. Dazu kam ein ziemlicher Informations-Overload, der zwar die Seitenzahl erweitert, den Plot aber nicht vorantreibt.
Schnell hatte sich bei mir also absolute Langeweile eingestellt. Und das obwohl mich die angesprochenen Themen wirklich interessieren und ich mich auch damit auseinandersetzen möchte. Dies werde ich wohl auch weiterhin tun. Aber definitiv nicht mit Doctorow...

It's been a while since I've read such a technical techno thriller and one with an agenda.
It's somewhat repetitive and hammers the message in quite hard, but it's also a thriller with engaging characters I cared about.

Might be as close as you can get to essential sci-fi reading. Equal parts terrifying and uplifting. As always Doctorow delivers with a thought provoking plot tethered to characters with emotional weight.

I love Cory Doctorow and this delivers the same quality I've come to expect from him. It's not so much science fiction as the bleeding edge of the science present. Also, it's kind of like an anti-surveillance manifesto wrapped in a techno-spy thriller. It's got a lot to say and says it all eloquently and entertainingly. A great read.
