I read The House at Riverton as my January Unread Shelf pick (that I started at the end of February because I had so many library books to begin the year with). The theme for January was to pick a book with high expectations. I had high expectations for a couple of reasons. One, this book deals with an English manor house prior to WWI and falls into the "genre" I like to call (after the FugGirls description) of Rich British People Having Romanitcal Problems in Wartime. Second, every Kate Morton book sounds like a book I would enjoy (and she is an often recommended author). So much so, that I have most of her back catalog on my shelf. I just haven't read it yet because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to expectations.
However, The House at Riverton was everything I wanted! I was a little slower reading it than I would have liked but that was not the book's fault! I loved the back and forth between present and past, I loved that we knew the ending without knowing the ending and I loved the rich descriptions of setting and characters. I will definitely be reading more by her!
