I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a country house, its inhabitants above and below stairs, with a family secret remembered only by an elderly lady who had been a maid there in her youth. It did remind me a little of the TV series Downton Abbey , but to be fair it was written earlier than the programme, and it didn't suffer too much by comparison. A cosy read for a summer's afternoon or a quiet evening..

3½ ster

To put it simply, I just couldn't keep reading the book.  I've enjoyed many of Morton's stories and enjoyed them immensely, but I couldn't finish this one.

Kate Morton, where have you been all my life?! I loved everything about this book. The characters, the setting, the plot, everything about this book was everything I wanted it to be. Can't wait to read her other works.

A very easy read. Good gently flowing story. A typical upstairs-downstairs (servants-aristocracy) tale. Nicely put together. Great Summer read.

It took me to about the middle of the book to "get into" it. I did like that the house was a character in itself. I felt the author did a good job in helping the reader to understand the differences then between the "haves" and the "have nots". And if the actress who was playing the part of Grace only knew the true story!
