Very difficult to get through the start but the middle was page turning in a chill way. Last chapter seemed disconnected but overall a nice story

I really struggled to read this one. The way it’s written and structured just isn’t working for my brain and the bouncing round in time and between characters made it difficult for me to follow. Normally this doesn’t bother me. I really wanted to give this a book a go but I think I just have to let this one go!

I took a while to get into this book due to the lack of quotation marks. I found it really offputting and nearly put the book down. I decided to persevere and I'm really glad I did - what a charming book.

I see a lot of reviews complaining about the slow pace, but really, what do you expect from a book entitled "still life"? If you wish for fast action and two page chapters, this is not the book for you. If, however, the idea of following a found family through the decades of the 20th century, getting to know them intimately, and watching them learn how to live and love appeals to you, I would highly recommend it. You will laugh and you will cry.
