I read the first chapter and I really didn’t like it. Couldn‘t stand the fluffy writing. It really felt like a hallmark-movie-book, although it wasn’t categorized as a romance novel.

Not my cup of tea.

I was so absolutely sure I’d love this book, I’ve loved every other book by this author. But I struggled to get into the story. I think it surprised me how sad I found it. On StoryGraph no one prior to me had categorized it as sad, yet that feeling was overwhelming to me.
Let me explain why.

Maggie runs a coffee shop that belongs to her family. She also has a collection of curiosities that she finds and connects to the right people. Of course I love the curiosities!
But Maggie leaves Magpies exactly the same as her mom left it because she seems to think her mom will come back and see it again. But Maggie’s mom “disappeared” in the ocean when Maggie was 11. Maggie is now 38. Maggie still thinks her mom is coming home. And the entire town goes along with it.

Maggie hires Ava to take care of her dad. She’s worried that he’s acting strangely.

Ava has secrets of her own and her own heartbreak and she wants to start fresh in this quirky, wonderful town.

Hands down my favorite character was Estrelle a kooky older lady that dresses all in black, makes predictions like she sees the future and people are both amazed by and a little afraid of. She brings a lot of magical fun to the story.

I also loved the cat and dog in this story.

There was a big twist at the end that I thoroughly enjoyed but I wish it had happened earlier so the idea could have been explored more.

Overall, not my favorite book by this author but I loved the magic and the characters and I’ll look forward to her next book.
