The quality of stories varies from story to story. The three stars I've given the volume is the average. Warlock at the wheel was a one star. However, Stealer of Souls and Carol Oneir's Hundreth Dream were both four stars. Lastly, The Sage of Theare was three stars.

Four distinct stories set in the world of Chrestomanci. The best of them is "Stealer of Souls", which takes place shortly after The Magicians of Caprona and depicts Cat and Tonino attempting to work together. There are some funny details of these characters, and the plot in this story is coherent and engaging. The next best story is "The Sage of Theare", which, though it includes Chrestomanci, is more like Dogsbody in tone, it's an engaging little piece about the organisation of the gods and heavens in the world of Theare. The final two stories are both abysmal: "Warlock at the Wheel" is simply nonsense, and not even funny nonsense, and "Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream" fails to engage, though it's at least more coherent than "Warlock." A disappointing selection, one of the few DWJ novels that leaves a bad taste.
