Very engaging and easy to read. So vivid. Agonizing, sometimes. People are so interesting!!

It is wild to me that, had I read this 10 years ago, I would have thought "wow things were wild back then, can't imagine, how evil people were" and I read it now and I'm like "well, we're back" and it seems horribly applicable.

Angelou manages to combine personal experiences of one child with social commentary very nicely, making it all fit together. Her personality reminded me somehow of Anne Shirley. But, of course, the book dealt with much more serious and lot darker situations and problems.

Started reading, then switched to an audiobook once it came through. I loved the audiobook. Listening to Maya Angelou read her own words was something else.

Captivating! I read excerpts of this before and wish I had read it earlier.

J'ai bien aimé, j'en ai appris plus sur la ségrégation aux usa à hauteur de vue d'une enfant, j'ai apprécié les phrases de sagesse populaire de la mère et de la grand mère ("hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, unsurprised by anything in between"), qq situations ahurissantes - le mois passé en autarcie avec des enfants des rues, comment Maya est tombée enceinte de son premier enfant, etc...

The first instalment of Maya Angelou's autobiographical series tells the tale of her youth and teenage years. This novel was extremely powerful as Angelou didn't hold back on the telling of her life. Every dark and uncomfortable thing that she has experienced, is included in this. Angelou does not sugar coat it. I really don't have much else to say about this book, except that it was gritty and I enjoyed it.
