This is the launching point for the Horus Heresy series of warhammer books. It attempts to familiarize the reader with the world and attempt to show the day-to-day prior to the events of the namesake. 

Not a lot actually happens to drive the plot forward, but instead sets up the dominos to fall. This should not be your primer to warhammer 40k, but it’s a great way to solidify some pre-existing knowledge.
