The problem with books about witches is that sometimes, they're full of random appropriation. As another reviewer said, this one involves bad takes on voodoo, smudging devoid of cultural context, and other random elements mashed together. It also features a protagonist who "isn't into depression."

Other than that, it's a pretty classic woman moves to new city, instantly identifies two chiselled love-interests, and solves the murder of someone who was awful to numerous people.

Just had a bad breakup? Move across the country, start a bakery, and become a witch. Standard practice. Katie even gets her own love triangle, with a generically pleasant firefighter and a bundle of red flags in a trenchcoat.

The mystery itself is okay but annoying. Ugly equals evil, with a few unremarkable evils added on. One of the local witches is Haitian, so prepare for some bad takes on Voodoo as well.
