This book was exactly what I wanted it to: an absolutely darling and well-characterized backstory for Tilly. I was choked up pretty much the entire time for one reason or another, on Tilly's behalf and my own -- she's very different than me in many ways, but being a young girl who can't figure out how to fit in hits close to home. I also enjoyed the look into non-Starfleet Federation life and some neat alien world-building. I would have read it all in one sitting, if I had started it on a Saturday.

A very quick read about my favourite Disco character that's more teenage angst than space action adventure but is a little bit of both and also a book that gave me nightmares about my mother. Poor Tilly.

Considering that this is a coming-of-age story about a 16-year-old character from a show I only watched a few episodes of, it was surprisingly compelling. It's hard to write this type of story without hitting some of the same notes as a million other novels published since Harry Potter but I was never bored and enjoyed being in Tilly's company.

My only complaint is that it doesn't feel very Trekkie until the last 20% of the book, but I will look out for more McCormack books in the future.

While this book is not particularly well written (by any means) it is a cute origin tale for Tilly. It picks up the pace once she leaves her school and by the end when she saves the day, you can't help being proud of her.

I didn't love this one, it was kind of a mess and didn't make a lot of sense canonically

I really enjoyed this book. I think the Tilly character is captured very well and her relationships with different people as she slowly grows into figuring out who she wants to be, are fun and interesting to read.

Many of her character quirks make sense as the relationship with her mother is revealed. I fully admit that she makes me furious I would love to throw several heavy things at her and forbid her from speaking to Tilly again.

Overall a fun read with some great adventures and self discovery. I honestly would enjoy reading a book about Tilly off travelling on her own and making her way in the world.

A prequel novel to the Star Trek: Discovery TV series about one of my favourite characters, Ensign Sylvia Tilly. This was an excellent coming of age tale about Tilly, set during her school years, and gives the background to her troubled relationship with her mother and decision to join Starfleet. McCormack does an excellent job of capturing Tilly's voice in this book - recommended for Tilly fans.
