This little book is all over the place. At first I had no idea that this was, in fact, a short story collection - I was expecting a novella. But no, this is a collection of 5(?) stories about an elderly woman who kills random people. The premise sounds fun but there is no substance to any of the stories. The first three or four stories are pretty much the same thing, a simple murder with a shit ton of unnecessary backstory that has nothing to do with the murder. The last two stories are actually the same story, just from different POV and I don't understand the need for that. I can see the charm behind this idea but I was so terribly disappointed by the execution and I feel like I kinda wasted my time with this one since I could've read just one story and that would be enough.

I never thought I'd describe a book about a serial killer as "charming", but, well, here we are. Maud is a delightful character, in a black humor sort of way: she's smart, independent, opinionated, and decisive. She's also a problem solver; if something's amiss, she doesn't fret about it, she fixes it -- even if her "fix" might involve a little light murder.
This was a very fast read, and while the very detached writing style normally would've irritated me, this was short enough that it didn't have time to grate. Definitely an entertaining little gem.
