Despite physics not being one of my best subjects at school I have always had a fascination for it and so was looking forward to reading this book. I did physics a-level but went no further so my knowledge is not brilliant but even so I found the first chapter a bit condescending. It's so hard to write science books for a lay person so I don't really hold that against it. Things went downhill from there though. I made the mistake of trying to read the book at work where I found that there were just too many distractions and consequently I got lost pretty quickly and just couldn't retain my interest in it. I much prefer Ben Miller's physics book for what it's worth. It won't stop me from persevering with physics though; it's like a relationship in which one person is clingingly possessive of the object of their affections while the other brusquely tries to brush them off. Oh physics, why don't you love me?!

A great little conceptual book on one section of modern physics. Doesn't get too involved and for anyone whose been interested in the field for a while will probably find it lacking. However its not marketed for us so I'm not reviewing it that way. For a pop science book it avoids math but still has more in it that Hawking's a brief history of time. Somehow surprising as publishers try to avoid math like the plague. While it can get a little nerd crushy about CERN and particle accelerators its a good book.

This book can't decide whom to please. With the predictable outcome that it pleases no one.

This book presents very complex concepts which I have attempted to begin to understand before in simple terms and examples, while also keeping the tone fun. Great read! Gave me a new appreciation for scientists like Einstein.
