Exactly what I needed to get through a reading slump! Fast enough paced mystery with a cool leading lady against an emotional backdrop. Definitely going to read more from this series.

London during the Blitz. This was an interesting view of the role of Americans in Britain before the US joined the war.

As always, the author beautifully captures the spirit of the times where her story is set. She has created in Maudie Dobbs a wonderful heroine. Were she real, I would love to call her friend. Winspear has never disappointed me in any of her books, and her streak continues with this time. This is truly a well written tale that will enthrall the reader and make them anxious for the next installment.

The heaviness of the Blitz permeates the story, bringing a sense of those weighty weary days. Thankfully it’s lifted by love, in Maisie’s life and elsewhere.
