Not sure why this one didn't really work for me. There are elements I adore (older lesbian archaeologist adventurer is, like, tailor-made for me, and I usually love stories that straddle the scifi/fantasy line), but for some reason they didn't make me love this one. I guess vampires are always a hard sell for me, and age-gap relationships, so vampire elves didn't appeal, nor did Tor/Noon.

But really the whole story left me cold, and I don't know why... I don't think it's necessarily the book's fault, as it's well-written and I can't lay my finger on an actual fault. No doubt others will enjoy it.

No official star rating from me (would be 2 stars personally). I'll leave the series to others.

It started off so strong and cool! But story-wise it got quite weak at the end and I'm very unsure how to feel about the main cast...
Cool setting and world-building though

A brilliantly crafted story set in a fantastical world. A sinister magic system. Vampires, witches and Indiana Jones? I'm hooked.

The writing was beautiful which is a sure fire way for me to give any book a high rating, but moreso the characters were well developed and the world felt very real. I love the little bits of worldbuilding woven into the story.

I really loved this but it did have some flaws. For one there was a bit of a lull at the 50% mark but I knew if I pushed through I would absolutely love the rest and I wasn't wrong. I'm still giving this 5 stars because despite that, it was a brilliant book.

It's simultaneously a throwback to epic fantasies of old whilst also being totally refreshing and new.

I bought the entire trilogy in one so I'm very glad I loved it. Looking forward to book 2!
