A really lovely little book. At the start I was a bit concerned it would just be a series of vignettes about visiting different worlds, but it moves on in good time to a "meatier" story bringing everything together in a satisfying way. It's not perfect, some things felt a little rushed or glossed-over, but I had a really fun time reading Riftmaster, with its loveable characters and intriguing, unique worlds and premise.

the non-binary representation wasn't for me. it felt clumsy at best, like a parody at worst

3.5

3.5 overall, higher than that for worldbuilding though - the world is cool and language is pretty descriptive for such distinctly alien landscapes/flora/fauna/etc. It's really hard to have given this low of a score for this book, because it's fantastic and deserves MUCH more attention than it's gotten, but I ultimately had some issues with the relative lack of character development, and there were some parts in the plot where things really deserved to be explained further. This book would make an incredible film (or even film series). Please, please read this, even if science fiction and fantasy aren't really your thing - it's worth it, if even just for the worldbuilding and crazy variety of alien species... and the occasional weird-but-cute drawings of said alien species!
