wow. spooky stories and scary dreams turns into beautiful gorgeous heartbreaking exploration of grief and family and cree folklore. the connections drawn between oil fields, mwiw, land stewardship, and cree folklore are so well positioned in a horror (tho i wouldn’t exactly call this horror) story. stunning debut!! i can’t wait to see what other stories jessica johns has to share. i cried at the end of the book and cried even harder reading the acknowledgements i love family!

This book was fantastic! Spooky and eerie, you could feel the magic coming out of the story.
Mackenzie has been having bad dreams, she sees her dead sister in a forest, crows follow her in the waking world and she’s able to bring things back from her dreams. Desperate for help, she goes back to Alberta to be with her family only for the dreams to get more extreme.
This is a great book about grief, guilt after a loved one dies, healing, family, the effects of greed and capitalism on small towns and the people living there.
Don’t read this at night! I was getting pretty spooked at certain points.

This book was slow to start and took a while to keep my interest. I wouldn’t say it was horror, but more a story of family and grief. There are supernatural elements tied to indigenous lore.

This book was creepy and left me wondering what would happen next without being super scary. If you're looking to read indigenous horror, I highly recommend this book.

I really liked this book, the story, characters, and relationships were all very clear. I liked how the author used the horror genre to talk about grief and community. The pacing was slow at first but once we got half way I felt like we really hit on a good rhythm.

Good premise, nice prose, thin characters and the themes not as fully explored or realized as I hoped.

This definitely may not be the scariest or most disturbing tale. But it’s a good thriller steeped in something familiar to my own culture in its portrayal of grief and the way we silently grieve. Folklore and family drama in a nice little package! :)
