I've never really described a book as "delightful" but that's what this one is. Funny, warm, touching, a good comfort read. If you love dogs, or just love people who love dogs, this is time well spent. This is just as much about the owners and their relationships with dogs as it is about the dogs themselves. I read this after watching and loving the first two seasons of the recent All Creatures Great and Small series; if you liked that chances are you'll find something to love here.

Series of short stories, very sweet. I read this as a child and it was as good as I remembered as an adult.

Although none of these stories were new to me - I've read all his books many times - I loved the introduction and the little notes at the end, some giving an end to the tale, others explaining context or sharing something about the real people.

I probably wouldn't buy it in addition to all the others (which I already own) but it was a fun read and would make a great gift for a dog-lover, or will act as an entry book into the world of a rural Yorkshire vet in the 1940s. It reminded me of how touching, poignant or downright strange some of these stories were - and how much I laughed!

Great read when the world is just a little too much. James Herriot writes with a clear voice and transports you back to an earlier time, adding little notes into the stories commenting on how vet treatments have changed over the years. The only danger is that not every story has a happy ending, so I regretted reading a story right before bed on a couple occasions. Overall a very pleasant, quiet read

I already read other books by James Herriot and I always love them. They are funnily written and tell of real life people and their life's and problems. How humans deal with their animals is an interesting topic.
These dog stories are a nice collection of Herriot's other books, containing some of the best stories about dogs. Happy ones, sad ones, funny ones,.... You can find anything in here.
If you love dogs and reading about them, go and get this book, you'll love it.
