This was just “okay” for me. I typically enjoy Cheryl Strayed stories but this one didn’t read the same for me as it seems to have touched others. To me, it felt like talking to an old friend who gave a child up for adoption and just hearing about it years later. No emotion, just facts.

A moving story, very well told.

However I did find myself becoming less engaged with the story during the last few chapters. I think that's because I knew there wasn't much left of the book and I was skeptical about whether the story would manage to have a satisfying conclusion. And although it did enjoy the whole of the story, I do feel like the ending could have been fleshed out a bit more.

One particularly satisfying part of the book for me was the formating/chapter lengths. I feel like the chapter lengths worked well and really added something extra to the overall reading experience.

Geraldine’s perspective growing up in the ’60s and getting pregnant was not the way she wanted to go. Her parents wanted her to leave their town because they were embarrassed. The situation happens all too often. I wanted more of Geraldine’s character and how she really told her story. I think in the end she was now free of everything. Listening to the audio made the story interesting and kept me wanting more. The author told the truth about how life happens when you have to live in this type of situation. I like how all the characters come together and relate to one another. The storyline was right on point. The author's writing style was precise and clear. The themes in the story are young sexual experiences, unplanned pregnancy, death, abandonment, abortion, adoption, and young marriages. This book was well written and intriguing. I definitely wanted to read more by this author. I'm going to read all the books in this collection also. I recommend this emotionally packed short story to all avid book readers. This touching story gets 5 stars.
