Is it a 4-star plot? Admittedly no. Are they 4-star characters? Absolutely.

A weak Christie, with an excessively convoluted plot for the story she wanted to tell and an abuse of deus ex machina type situations. She wrote much better stories in other books.

A typically snappy read from Agatha Christie. This one has almost a John Buchan vibe to it, with conspiracies, disguises, mistaken identities and suchlike. Quite implausible but very fun. I could imagine Hitchcock making a decent film of it in the 1930s, along the lines of the 39 Steps or the Lady Vanishes.

I liked this one! The mystery solvers in this story are a witness, Bobby, and his plucky friend Frankie. They are definitely a highlight of the book, and fun to follow. Their sleuthing felt realistically amateur while also being at least partially clever.

"Murder is a dirty business and even in the most odd circumstances, at the most unfortunate moments, one cannot resist a thrill of the chase."

Just realized that i never posted sth for my april christie read, shame, it was an entertaining one!

"Why didn't they ask Evans?" first published in 1934, starts it's premise by one Bobby Jones finding a nearly dead man on the rocks below a cliff, who with his final breath says "Why didn't they ask Evans?", before dying.

That's how the adventure of solving this dangerous mystery falls into the hands of Bobby and his companion Frankie!

I liked the dynamic between Bobby and his friend a lot! It's always a nice switch from the older POVs like Poirot or Marple to a younger perspective on mystery and life (those 2, or Tommy and Tuppence!)

It was a bit mean of Christie to start it with THAT sentence given what happend thru out the book and it's end 😂 how the fk would i have ever gotten that.

I did get bambozzled yet again about who did the deed too. The good old case of having the right idea but getting tricked into believing sth else right at the end. So sadly, another win for Christie, another loss for me 😔
