TW for alcoholism and rape

This book was nothing what I expected. I’d hoped for a cute little exes to lovers rom com through the shared experience of music. It was a lot deeper than that, and explored dark themes of poverty, alcoholism, and neglect.

The characters were endearing, and I wanted Alison and Dan to get together but oh my GOD it was a slog. They didn’t get chatting again until about 10 chapters in and when they did it dragged for so long before they met again.

I had the audiobook for this and can I just say how draining it was to listen to so many accents on one book: Sheffield, Scottish, Northern Irish, Australian, Portuguese, American (just to name a few). Oof, it was a bit much.

The writing was okay, a little bit repetitive and the storyline dragged.

Don’t think I’ll be going for anymore of Sanderson’s work.

Cawpile: 5* 9.21

I think maybe part of my enjoyment was helped by the setting being near my hometown. It’s always that way I find when there is nostalgia. There were references to bands that I’d heard of or knew, one even that my mum had taught.
I think sometimes those things that you can connect with make you really fall into a book.
