Kiku Hughes deftly weaves a powerful yet nuanced story of community trauma, and the effects left on subsequent generations through this framed narrative. Less so about the specific day to day life in the camps as Okubo’s Citizen 13660, this novel uses the time between the inciting events and our present day to examine the repercussions often felt by sansei and yonsei Nikkei, but which are usually not discussed and only rarely taught. This gorgeously-rendered fantastical story of a different time and place mourns the devastation of a cultural identity while still acknowledging the ways traditions evolve as families and communities heal.

A touching story about the incarceration of Japanese Americans in the US after World War II.
Although the artwork's stunning, the main ability of the character was never explained. Which felt a little odd to me. Why not just tell the history of your people without elaborate plot points to make it interesting?
A decent read though.

Highly informative, and a great read to start to understand how the diaspora from other cultures work in the West.
The art was gorgeous and I loved the colour palette used.
