I’ve  read bits and pieces of Kafkas diaries, so l knew I was getting into a book that would depress me. And just as he always does, Kafka depressed me. When our main character Gregor, wakes up one day, he realizes that he has turned into a giant beetle over night. Just the day before, he had been the sole provider for his family. Upon discovering him, his family begins to alienate him. He terrifies them, and he becomes a burden for them. The more they isolate him, the worse Gregor feels, and he begins to deteriorate. Yet the more his family isolates him, the better they feel. An unlikely situation portrayed with realistic reactions makes this story heartbreaking. Knowing Kafkas relationship with his own family makes it even more gut wrenching.

the metamorphosis is a novel in which gregor samsa becomes isolated from his own family after he turns into a giant bug, and starves to death in the end. this is a story that could be a metaphor for many things, or rather many reasons why someone's family might reject them. it can also be a metaphor for how capitalism affects people. the writing style was, to me, very good since i enjoy kafka. i felt bad for gregor at some points simply because his family was so incredibly horrible to him. i also appreciate this book because it inspired a lot of peculiar little books that came after it, and of course, it very much influenced existentialism. it's not my favorite classic ever, but i still believe it's quite good.
