In this memoir, David goes in depth about his obsession with his son’s addiction, as he tries to understand what went ‘wrong’ and searches for a cure. The writing is very vulnerable and real and does not attempt to conceal the worry, frustration, helplessness, and guilt felt by David as he watches his son’s downward spiral from the sidelines. This book details the cyclical motion of addiction, from using to recovery and back again, and how this disease strains relationships, families, and parents.

The only reason I didn’t rate this 5 stars is because it was long and often repetitive. I do think the author was conveying how he felt through his son’s relapses, and included these moments of reflecting and restarting to include these very real experiences with addiction.
