Very good continuation, although some of the the female characters are a bit... poorly written. Not to mention there's way too much sexual assault, that feels almost gratuitous.

I read up to page 190. It's my sheer stubbornness and unwillingness to give up that brought me thus far. If not for the world building it is pretty much without merit. I have not come across this many annoying and unlikable characters in so few pages. The story line was lost somewhere in the obsession with virginity and holier than thou Elene. I did the unthinkable and skipped to the end. The ending gave me some hope for book three.

This book is somehow both better and worse than the first in the series. We do get more character development for Protagonist #2, and it's pretty cool. The action is intense and it's a fairly fun read for the most part. On the other hand, character development is a problem for nearly everybody else. Characters drift in, get a few pages, then leave not to be heard from for ages. I found myself constantly getting out of the flow of the book trying to figure out who we're now looking at and why we care. On top of that, a lot of terms still get thrown around that have no context to the reader. A glossary would be nice, but I would probably just hate always having to flip back to it.

The writing is better, but I think that Weeks is starting to put in curse words for the sake of shock. It only serves to make some passages more juvenile than they should be. I'm not shocked, and some paragraphs cross from gritty to cartoony quickly due to excessive f-bombs. I think this book needed more edits.

Still, this is a pretty easy and fun read. I like the world, but I wish I was more immersed in it.

Kylar is forced to reclaim his Night Angel persona. At first, faithful to Elene's request to not kill - Kylar can't help himself. Their chaste life, caring for Momma K and Blunt's daughter, the boredom of an average life. He begins to train at night - finding the monsters of the dark.
Until Jarl visits - with news of Logan. Kylar can't abandon his friend.
An excellently frustrating setup for the final novel.

Yet another book written by a dude where every female character's whole arc is defined by whether she's a virgin, a sex worker, and/or a victim of sexual assault. :/
