This book was a great story about a family and how they got there. It was a very friendly read with the exception of the football background. I'm sure the football details brought in the male readers so they could get their feels on but I tended to speed read through the details. They were there on purpose but in too much detail for my preference. I would still recommend this book to others. Great story, great writing. Worth the time it took to read.

It felt a little “white savior” at times.

Meh.

The most interesting bits were about the evolution of football as a game.

Regarding Michael Oher, I was mixed at this portrayal. On the one hand, this is a nice story of a family who is aware they have a lot of money, so rather than just use it selfishly they use it help elevate someone who would otherwise not have the opportunities money creates. On the other hand, the way Oher is talked about comes across as a bit condescending and a little mean. Basically all of the (white) people that help Oher essentially think "Boy he really doesn't know anything, but the sonofabitch is big so let's push him to play football". I don't know, it just felt rude.

This book is the epitome of "whatever". I read it, and I don't really feel like it impacted me at all.

I learned more about football than I will ever need to know but it was needed to tell the story. The best part was the last two chapters which highlighted Michael Oher's childhood. It always comes back to our childhood and how important it is.

It is very football heavy, so I would only recommend it if football is your life. I thought this wad going to just be about Michael Oher, but it talked about other football stars and things. I think it was a good book, but I just don't really like football that much. I was hoping it would be more life story less football.
