Lady Charis Weston needs to escape. With her step brothers after her fortune and willing to do anything to get it, Charis just needs to hide for a few weeks before she comes into her inheritance. When her path crosses with Sir Gideon Trevithick’s, he takes her to his ancestral home and keep her under his protection. But her brothers aren’t willing to let her go without a fight and Gideon has his own nightmares to face.

This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I saw Anna Campbell talking at an author’s signing last year and bought this book after hearing her talk. I think I was expecting more about Gideon’s Indian ordeal but let’s face it – too much story regarding being held captive and brutally treated wouldn’t make a very good romance novel.

I like Ms. Campbell’s style. Charis is a strong heroine who doesn’t let her circumstances get the best of her. She’s a fighter and she will do anything to get what she wants – even if that’s a slightly confused but oh-so heroic Gideon. Gideon is a broken man – but very engaging and likeable. He’s honourable, a bit gruff and every bit the tall, dark and handsome leading man. His romance with Charis was a pleasure to read. I thought their relationship was nicely paced and had enough surprises to keep me interested.

Historical romances still aren’t really my thing but I can see myself devouring a few more of Anna Campbell’s Regency novels in the future.
4 stars.

Another fabulous read by Anna Campbell who does tortured heroes so well. Poor Gideon is recovering from a horrific captivity and the sweet and strong Charis is just the woman to help him to heal. Gut-wrenching tale showing shadows, guilt, and fear people have are not just external. Despite his affliction, Gideon helps Charis get away from the family who would marry her off for her fortune. It takes a brave woman to run away as she has at this time and it takes a brave man to stand up to them also.

Loved the characters from the first but adored them as time when on and I learned more about them. A story of redemption and healing. A must read for those who love historical fiction.

Honestly this book surprised me. I do not typically read romance but it kept my attention and I was rooting for the main couple throughout the entire book.

I don't understand people who disliked this book but thought the beginning was strong and the heroine at that point was great. The characterization was clumsy from the start. The heroine, Choris (or whatever ridiculous names the romance authors always pick ) hated and distrusted all men based on her profligate stepbrothers who were abusive villains. And yet, when the hero, Gideon, find her hiding in teh stable, our battered, willful, prideful men-hater savors Gideon's beautiful face, his nice legs, his velvety voice. Why on earth couldn't back and have her salivate over his fine features at least a day later. As for the tortured hero, who cannot abide human touch (because of some trauma) well he is all over Chloris in a manner of a week or two. I love romances where the hero cannot succumb to the heroine for some strong reason. there were moments here when it was done well, but sadly most of the book can be skimmed.

This is a good read if you love historical romances with poor tortured heroes.

Charis is an heiress on the run from her two step brothers determined to marry her off to a man they on money too. On her run she meets Gideon who offers her his protection.

Gideon is back from several years in an Indian prison where he has been imprisoned, beaten, and tortured. This has given him PTSD and the inability to have anybody touch him without getting sick and scared.

Of course they fall in love and it is very sweet and very dark. Anna Campbell is becoming my favorite historical author after Lisa Kleypas even though she's only written a handful of books.

Good story, but the last third devolved into endless sex scenes.

For such a melodramatic story, it is surprisingly boring. Overkill on the wordy.

Here we've got a hero with serious PTSD/survivors' guilt whose issues are magically solved by hot sex. There were some good bits (mostly the sex), but it just tried too hard.
I would like a book about Akash though.
