2.5 stars--unevenly written. Some parts were compelling enough for me to want to know what happens next, but other parts were so much of an info dump that I wondered if this was Phalen's first attempt at writing. This is probably an interesting read for the middle grade audience for whom it was intended, but as an older reader, I was not impressed.

I picked up this book for my 12 year old to read when he is with us on the weekends. I also thought it looked intriguing. I was pleasantly surprised by how well put together the plot was and how attached I became to the characters. I am looking forward to reading the next 12 books!
