The context of this book was more interesting to me than the writing itself. Impressive he wrote it so young and I enjoyed something easy but the characters were one dimensional and it became slightly pretentious at points. Quick and worth reading considering how important it was when published.

Scritto nel 1948 ma per certi versi ancora tremendamente attuale: uno di quei romanzi che ti fanno amare di più la lettura!

not the ending i wanted or expected but a morbid end to the story of the morally complex protagonist.
this novel captures the emotions surrounding homosexuality at the time and all the discrepancies within it. SUCH an interesting read though, i feel like the harsh reality of the 1940’s queer scene hasn’t been presented as frank as it is in this book
anyway here’s some quotes i liked:

“there was no other life for him but the surrogate one of putting words on paper”
“nothing is ‘right’ only denial of instinct is wrong”
“we affect one another quite enough by merely existing”
