The first few stories in this book were so good--creepy and unsettling and just the right amount of wild to put you off-kilter. But I honestly felt like the further into the book I went, the less compelling and less well-written the stories became. A bummer because it started off so well!

Dear sweet mercy this took so long to read and was so disappointing. I had really high expectations for this because I enjoyed Tender is the Flesh and still think about it pretty regularly, but this short story collection managed to dash almost every expectation I had in a mostly negative way. While most short story collections are generally uneven, for this one the scale is basically tipped over on its side because of how much the bad outweighs the good. While I did enjoy a couple stories (namely Unamuno’s Boxes, Perfect Symmetry, and The Continuous Equality of the Circumference- which no one will be able to convince me wasn’t inspired by the blueberry girl in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- with special mention to Candy Pink and Teicher vs. Nietzsche), most of these were truly unbearably boring and over-written. I can’t believe any of these stories won awards.

Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird is a captivating collection of short stories that will shock, amaze, and even disgust readers. The stories are well crafted with well-drawn characters and unexpected twists, making for a memorable read.

Many of the stories in Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird are not for the faint of heart, as they deal with dark and unsettling subject matter and that will have readers cringing in terror. I have to say that some stories bored me but the excellent ones worth the read.

Overall, it's perfect for fans of horror and dark fiction . Whether you are a fan of the genre or just looking for a good read, this book is well worth your time. Just be sure to read Tender is the Flesh before diving in so you can prepare yourself for what's to come.
