I read the first Penelope book and, being American, had to wait for one of the following books to show up stateside before I could read any of the others. I was a bit worried about reading the last book before #2 or #3, but while I'm sure I missed a great deal, #4 stands alone fairly well. There's enough backstory to keep you from being lost but not so much that you feel as if there's no use to reading the remaining books.

I really enjoyed Penelope's solution to the difficult problem she's presented with. It wasn't sugarcoated that this was an easy decision, nor would it necessarily be right for anyone else, but it was something Penelope felt she needed to do and now I want to read the other books to see how she goes from desperately not wanting to leave her family to having found a new branch of her family.
